Brae cafe: Chapelton’s unmissable gem

unnamed-9 Brae cafe: Chapelton's unmissable gem

Situated five miles south of Aberdeen, the vibrant town of Chapelton offers residents and visitors a lively town centre full of thriving small businesses catering to a wide range of lifestyles.

Nestled in the heart of Chapelton is Brae, a charming family-run cafe built around the local community, offering customers a warm and inviting atmosphere and menu brimming with delicious food and drink. Since launching in 2022, Brae has quickly become a favourite spot for locals and visitors alike, providing a welcoming space for regulars and new faces to visit and enjoy the locally sourced delights on offer.

We sat down with Jodie, co-founder of Brae, to discuss what customers can expect when visiting Brae, the inspiration behind opening a small family-run business in the heart of Chapelton and some exciting events in the pipeline…

What inspired you to establish Brae and where did your passion for hospitality come from?

My family and I initially opened a gourmet pie business, Breer Pie Co., during the summer of 2020. With this being our first experience of running a small business in the hospitality sector, Breer Pie Co. allowed my mum, brother and I to learn what it’s like to work together as a family, and the business was launched at the Chapelton Farmer’s Market in September 2020. From there, we built a brand (and product) that we were incredibly proud of, as well as a family of pie supporters who helped us create our first successful small business.

“When the opportunity to start Brae was presented to us, it felt like the perfect chance to put all that we learned from Breer Pie Co. into this new concept, and we began to build our vision for Brae from there. We believe that all roads led us to Brae and we are so proud of what we’ve managed to achieve in such a short time – all thanks to our amazing loyal customers!”

What can residents and visitors expect when popping into Brae?

“Brae is an inviting space that feels just like coming home. We love welcoming in our regulars as well as new faces in the cafe, and particularly enjoy our customers’ excitement around the scones, questions about who makes our delicious food and seeing them discovering all the little details that make Brae, Brae.

IMG_20240228_084506_860-1 Brae cafe: Chapelton's unmissable gem

“We spent a lot of time carefully selecting suppliers; from our specialty coffee supplier, Figment, our tea supplier, Tea Drop and our free range pork for our sausage rolls, supplied by Ingrams. There is a lot of love, care and attention that goes into this busy little place!”

Since opening in 2022, what has been your favourite thing about being situated in Chapelton?

Definitely the community, other small businesses and fantastic local support. We can feel Chapelton’s appreciation for Brae and our team strives to make every visit a great experience, ensuring each and every customer feels welcomed and appreciated.

“Running a cafe isn’t always an easy job, but the positive feedback, 5 star Google reviews and engagement on social media make it all worthwhile. I hear it all the time – ‘Chapelton is the place to be’ – and we feel very lucky to be part of the Chapelton story.”

How does Brae contribute to the community of Chapelton?

“Brae offers a hub in the middle of Chapelton that is centred around the community. We love knowing our customers’ names, coffee orders and seeing their wee ones grow up – including those that we met at our first weekly mums group back in summer 2022! Brae is the perfect place for Chapelton residents and visitors to unwind, meet friends, grab lunch and just enjoy being in this beautiful new town.

“We also love getting involved in community events. In 2024, we are one of the proud sponsors of Chapelton’s 10K, and last year we entered (and won!) a category in the Chapelton Scarecrow Festival. It’s lovely to be part of such a thriving and vibrant community.”

Can you tell us a little bit about the recent events that have been hosted at Brae? And do you have any exciting upcoming events?

We’ve hosted a few pie nights, yoga brunches with Sal The Wellness Warrior as well as dried flower wreath making with Karen from This is 36 in the past few years. We have lots of exciting plans for more wellness inspired events coming over the summer, including a few local collaborations. Watch this space!”

If you’re paying a visit to Brae, don’t forget to stop by The Boxes, Chapelton’s innovative retail hub, Patey Park and the scenic Chapelton trail – starting at Hume Square in the town centre!

At the heart of this vibrant community, The Lounge stands as a beacon of relaxation and style. Join Kelly, co-owner at The Lounge, as she guides you through a visual tour, discussing not only the thoughtful design and soothing ambiance but also the array of treatments available that make it a cherished destination among Chapelton residents.

Let’s now explore the serene spaces of The Lounge and discover what makes this local gem a favourite among the community…

Welcome Area

“We wanted the reception area to be welcoming and open. We rebranded our colour scheme when we moved premises, choosing olive green and gold! To complement that, we introduced more earthy tones throughout. We also added palm trees to enhance the ambiance and improve air quality by removing pollutants.

“The welcome space is also still evolving; we recently added a waiting area and extended our retail space.”

Treatment Rooms

“We offer a range of pampering services in the treatment room at The Lounge, including massages, ELEMIS and Medik8 facials, advanced facials like microneedling, dermaplaning, and peels. We also provide Million Dollar facials and advanced electrical facials, which include microcurrent and LED light therapy.”

“Our most popular treatment at the moment is our Re-set – Back, Face & Scalp Spa Treatment. This includes an ELEMIS express facial, scalp massage, deep cleansing back exfoliation followed by a muscle-melting back massage. Another firm favourite is the hot stone massage!”

“ELEMIS takes a holistic approach to skincare. Backed by clinical trials, their products help protect, restore, and renew skin health. With a foundation in aromatherapy, ELEMIS products are thoughtfully created with natural fragrances and indulgent textures, providing a luxurious self-care experience with visible and tangible results.”

Nail Station

“At The Lounge, our clients adore BIAB (Builder In A Bottle) for its durability and natural look, perfect for those who prefer low-maintenance yet stylish nails. Lip gloss nails are also a big hit, featuring glossy finishes in vibrant shades like pink and peach that perfectly capture the essence of spring. Additionally, gel polish remains a favourite for its long-lasting shine and variety of colors that complement any occasion or season.

“Whether you’re looking for a classic manicure, a relaxing pedicure, or the latest in nail trends, The Lounge offers an array of services to pamper and beautify your hands and feet.”

Hair Stations

“We meticulously designed each space at The Lounge to be versatile and inviting. For the hair station, our goal was to create a setting that fosters both social interaction and privacy, which led us to choose a long communal table. Positioned to overlook the scenic surroundings outside and within the salon, our neutral and earthy color palette, complemented by accents of gold, enhances the overall ambiance.

“This chic and comfortable environment sets the stage for a range of services, from expert hair styling and cutting to personalised hair coloring techniques that bring out your natural beauty. We’re committed to providing not only exceptional hair care but also a relaxing and stylish experience tailored to meet your individual needs and preferences.”

Retail Space

“Our retail space offers a range of products carefully selected to enhance your beauty and wellness routine. We retail ELEMIS and Medik8 skincare products, as well as Kevin Murphy hair products. We chose to work with brands that are environmentally friendly, cruelty-free, and vegan-friendly. Both ELEMIS and Medik8 have BCorp status. During the festive season we also have gift sets and exclusive collections available!

“People often ask if there is a favourite product and I always say it’s hard to choose a favourite. ELEMIS is a beautiful luxury spa brand and flies off the shelves, Medik8 is medical-grade skincare tailored toward achieving healthy skin, and Kevin Murphy is skincare for your hair – they all complement each other wonderfully.”

Photo-of-the-bar-at-The-Lounge-Chapelton-edited A visual tour of The Lounge at Chapelton

The Bar

“This final space is still a work in progress. We are designing the bar to be a multi-use space, available for exclusive use. We have hosted events like an ELEMIS event and Mother’s Day spa treatments here, with grazing boxes from our friends at Brae. We plan to host more events in the future and we recently added a high bar table to use as a social space where clients can have their nails done and enjoy a complimentary glass of fizz!”

Nourish and glow with The Juicing Co. at The Boxes

Less than a 20 minute drive from Aberdeen city centre, the thriving town of Chapelton provides its residents with an extensive range of beautiful new homes, plentiful green spaces and a bustling town centre.

In the heart of this vibrant community are The Boxes, temporary retail structures providing start-up businesses with the opportunity to expand their presence. Bringing a refreshing blend of local charm and healthy living to Chapelton, The Juicing Company is the latest addition to The Boxes, offering residents delicious (and nutritious) raw, cold pressed juices. Established in 2017, Founder and Director of The Juicing Co. Vanessa Bremner seized the opportunity to create a company with health and wellbeing at the forefront.

We sat down with Vanessa to discuss the inspiration behind The Juicing Company, the benefits of cold pressed juices and the inspiration behind opening an establishment in Chapelton’s town centre!

What inspired you to establish The Juicing Company and where did your passion for healthy, fresh juice come from?

“My passion began when I saw the difference in my own journey during my time living in Singapore, where I took part in two fitness classes that completely changed my life. I loved learning about nutrition, wholefoods and how we can heal our bodies by using food as medicine. Following this, I threw myself into every nutrition class I could find and changed my entire lifestyle – hunting for every juice bar, raw food cafe and refined, sugar-free treat that Singapore had to offer!

“Before going to these classes and embarking on my health journey, I suffered from daily fatigue, oily skin, low energy, terrible bloating and stomach pain.  All of these symptoms quickly began to disappear after I overhauled my lifestyle, and started focusing on nourishing my body with fresh whole foods and reducing/eliminating processed foods.

“Honing in on my new-found passion for all things health and wellbeing, my husband and I went on to travel the world – from India to New York, Australia to the Maldives and all over South East Asia – learning more about the local food from each destination. However, after falling pregnant with our first baby in 2015, I returned to Aberdeen and tried to implement our new lifestyle back home, which proved difficult as I struggled to source the same high-quality, healthy foods and raw juice was impossible to find. This inspired me to bring my dream to life and start supplying healthy, cold pressed juices to Aberdeen.

“I took the leap and decided to register The Juicing Co., and everything just seemed to fly from there!”

What are some of the health benefits people can experience when drinking raw/cold pressed juices?

“Raw, cold pressed juice is an incredible and valuable tool for optimising your health. The juicing process removes the insoluble fibre from the fresh ingredients and produces a pure juice that has come directly from nature – filled with vitamins, minerals and live enzymes!

“Each of our 500ml bottles contains approximately 1kg of fresh produce, and because the insoluble fibre has been removed, the vitamins and minerals within the juice can be absorbed quickly and easily, nourishing your cells and allowing those nutrients to be used exactly where they are needed.

“Incorporating raw, cold pressed juice into your daily diet can provide many health benefits, but consistency is key to seeing long term results. Benefits our clients have reported include clearer and brighter skin, reduced bloating, increased energy, improved sleep and weight loss. Although weight loss isn’t something we focus on, we do have clients who use juicing with their 5:2 etc lifestyles.”

Why did The Boxes at Chapelton appeal to you when opening The Juicing Company?

“When I was looking to take the next step and open our own juice production kitchen and juicery, an opportunity came up at The Boxes in Chapelton which seemed like the perfect option. A beautiful location with great terms for small businesses and fantastic support from the team at Chapelton was an opportunity that I couldn’t turn down.”

What is your favourite thing about being based in Chapelton?

“Working in Chapelton comes with many perks, but my favourite things about the town have to be the lovely community, stunning views and diverse range of wonderful small businesses.”

What kind of products does The Juicing Company offer?

“We offer a wide range of raw, cold pressed juices made to order from our Chapelton Juicery and with nationwide delivery, ranging from powerful Tonic Shots, Fridge Fillers, 3 Day Cleanses and Mini Cleanse. We also plan to open as a ‘grab and go’ juice shop once a month and/or at The Chapelton farmers markets, allowing you to pop in and enjoy all the incredible benefits of juice on the go. Stay active in Chapelton with The Carved Group

Chapelton is filled with a thriving array of independent businesses, ranging from luxurious beauty and spa treatments at The Lounge on Quarryline Street to the refined craft beers offered by Devenick Drinks Co at The Boxes. But it’s not just the retail spaces that thrive in the community. A local dynamic duo, Katie and Neil, have cultivated a community-driven approach to health and vitality with their thriving online business, The Carved Group.

To delve into the story behind The Carved Group, we had the opportunity to sit down with co-owner Neil to discuss the journey, services, and aspirations fueling the business, and why the Chapelton community should consider getting involved!

How did The Carved Group come about, and what inspired its creation?

“Katie started her coaching business, Carved by Carbie, over 10 years ago now and I started mine, Back to Basics Coaching, in 2022. At the start of 2023, we had the brain wave of combining the businesses, and for me to join the business full time, leaving my corporate position – a risk that was definitely worth taking as we have grown from strength to strength since then!

“Katie is studying nursing as she has a passion for helping people which ties in perfectly with our coaching business, as the main aim for us is to change people’s lives for the better.

“We are also both competitive bodybuilders (although we don’t expect clients to be!). We focus 99.9% on lifestyle, and for me, it was not only helping people but also about sharing a passion for training and finding the limit (and beyond). We believe that if you combine the two, results will follow!”

What specific fitness services does The Carved Group offer to its clients?

“We currently offer online coaching which is our busiest service. Our coaching focuses on mental wellbeing, building good habits and routines, fitness and physical performance, and self-belief. We also offer a very limited number of 1:1 sessions at Impact Fitness in Stonehaven, where you get everything included in our online package including one face-to-face session per week with Katie.

“Additionally, we also offer Carved Habitual which is our foundation group course. This is a 6-week course focused purely on habit building and mindset work.”

How does The Carved Group provide support and guidance to clients, especially in an online setting?

“Each client has their own WhatsApp group with both of us, meaning someone is always on hand to support if the client requires it. We also often arrange video calls so we can get some face-to-face time with clients. Every week our clients get in-depth video feedback on their unique coaching plan/tracker which they fill in daily, so no stone is left unturned!”

Why should the Chapelton community get involved with The Carved Group?

“We of course live in Chapelton and work from here. Maybe even one day we will run a boot camp in the village! We offer a selection of services for all fitness levels and we also support local where we can, and I guess it’s nice to have that reciprocated.”

What are your future goals for The Carved Group?

“At the moment we are focusing a lot on growing the online side of the business. Our vision includes a wellbeing and aesthetics clinic, potentially a gym or PT studio, and many other ideas. But we always take things one step at a time and focus our efforts on what we are passionate about, and that’s helping and providing services to help people and make them feel great!”

What do you enjoy most about running your own business?

“The hard work! This sounds strange and I think there is a common misconception that being your own boss allows more freedom – it doesn’t!

“When you are a small but growing business there is no downtime, it’s 24/7. But, it’s incredibly rewarding to see something you work so hard at grow and become recognised in the community. One of our clients, Nicola McGee, is a Chapelton resident and joined The Carved Group as a 1:1 client before moving online to prepare for her wedding. She absolutely loved her experience and couldn’t thank us enough for making her feel amazing on her big day!”

What do you like about living and working in Chapelton?

“I started looking at properties in Chapelton in 2016 and instantly fell in love with how the village felt. It reminded me of a peaceful town of days gone by! Friendly and neighbourly with a strong sense of community, and of course very aesthetically pleasing!

“It’s close to the city but far enough away to be tranquil, making it the perfect place to live and work. The green areas allow for perfect head space and a welcome break from being buried in a laptop screen.

“It took 5 years to eventually buy the perfect house for us but we got there in the end and finally moved in spring 2022. We are extremely happy here and looking forward to a good few years here yet.”

In Chapelton’s vibrant landscape, The Carved Group is a hub for wellness and community involvement. Through their personalised coaching, Katie and Neil help people reach their full potential and are dedicated to making lives better, both in Chapelton and beyond.
