One of the main benefits of life in Scotland is the beautiful landscape, with endless hiking trails and a wide range of outdoor activities available on your doorstep. From wide stretching moors to rugged coastline, you don’t have to travel far to find some amazing scenery and fun activities.
With the warmer days and lighter evenings fast approaching, here’s a round-up of nearby walks, trails and other outdoor activities to explore this summer. All located in or around the Chapelton area, read on to be inspired about what’s on our doorstep and enjoy spending time outdoors with family and friends this summer.
Walks & Trails
Dunnottar Woods
This pleasant 3.5km walk is located on the outskirts of Stonehaven and takes you amongst beautiful woodland with two burns running through it. The woods were created during the same time period as Dunnottar House which was established in 1806 and demolished in 1959. It is a circular trail and can be accessed from the car park or via foot from the town centre.
Inverbervie to Johnshaven
Beginning at the seafront car park in the charming village of Inverbervie, this 7.5 km trail takes you on a moderate walk along the coast, passing through Gourdon Harbour and continuing all the way to Johnshaven.
Along the walk you will be likely see some local wildlife, as the route leaves the coast and makes its way inland amongst the grassy lanes – it is not uncommon to spot rare birds and butterflies.
Three Stones Hill Circular
This lovely 11.9km looped trail takes you into Fetteresso Forest and takes approximately 3 hours 23 minutes to complete. Popular amongst many hikers and trail runners, the track is clearly visible and in great condition, making it perfect for walking, running or hiking.
Hill of Swanley
For those looking for a walk with a bit of elevation, Hill of Swanley is a wonderful 7.7km loop located near Stonehaven. The trail can be considered reasonably challenging taking approximately 2 hours to finish and is perfect for runners or dog walkers. There are multiple vantage points throughout the walk that open up, boasting incredible forestry views.
Chapelton Trail
Around the local Chapelton and Newtonhill area are lots of wonderful walking trails accessible from your doorstep, including the Chapelton Trail. Stretching for 4.5km on a circular route, this trail takes approximately 1 hour and takes you amongst the incredible woodland scenery and flourishing wildlife.
Starting at Hume Square, the trail guides you through numerous marked points including Causey Mounth, East Drive, Duke’s Walk, Elsick Burn, Dubbis Stile and Cairnhill Copse. With plenty of magnificent views to admire along the way, this trail is perfect for the whole family.
Outdoor Activities
Dunnottar Castle
A trip to Dunnottar Castle is certainly amongst one of the top activities for those visiting or living in Aberdeen. This breathtaking ruined castle sits proudly on the edge of the North Sea and holds a rich history.
As you descend down the steep steps you are greeted by a picturesque pebble beach – the ideal spot for skimming stones. You can also visit the inside of the castle which gives you the opportunity to explore the historic ruins and take in the magnificent views.
Stonehaven Open Air Swimming Pool
Stonehaven’s open air swimming pool is open throughout the summer months and is the ideal activity for families who are looking to take a dip. The swimming pool stretches for 50 metres long and is filled with clean seawater. Whether you are an avid swimmer or enjoy splashing about in the shallow end, there is something for everyone to enjoy.
The pool can be reached by bus, train or car and is clearly signposted. Swimming sessions can be booked up to 9 days in advance and it is recommended that you pre-book your visit through Live Life Aberdeenshire.
Stonehaven Beach
Stretching from approximately 1.1km, Stonehaven Beach is a popular place to visit, particularly during the warmer months. You can take a gentle stroll along the beachfront to the harbour or stop off and pick yourself up a delicious ice cream or tasty local meal from the fish and chip shop.
Chapelton Farmers’ Market
If you’re looking to get your hands on some fresh local produce then why not take a trip to Chapelton’s wonderful farmers’ market on Sunday 24th July. Held in Burgess Park in Chapelton, there is a large variety of incredible stallholders to choose from including hot food to takeaway.
Chapelton Bike Ride and Walk
Perhaps you are looking for an activity that is a bit faster paced? The Chapelton Bike Ride is held on Sunday 11th September and is a great day out for all of the family. You can choose between the option of taking part in a 12 or 46 mile cycle across the local area. All money raised during the event will be donated to the North East Sensory Services who are a local charity that focus on supporting those with sensory impairments.
Brio Retirement Living will also be hosting a 5km walk on the same date with kids entertainment and face painting too.
