Guest Blog Post: Meet Flock.HOME

Creative duo Alison Dickie and Amy Sawers launched Stonehaven-based Flock.HOME back in 2016 following their passion for upholstery.

Ali has a degree in fashion and textiles and Amy, although from a musical background, was brought up in and around the art of upholstery and furniture for generations. By joining forces, they felt the business could be made stronger!

Ali initially converted her garage into a studio space then by the time they were ready to launch their business, their furniture was displayed throughout it. Since then, Flock.HOME has gone from strength to strength, both with commissions and pop up shops throughout the North East.

Amy-and-Ali-FLOCKHome-1024x1024 Guest Blog Post: Meet Flock.HOME

We caught up with Alison and Amy to find out what drives their passion for upholstery, how they keep the challenge of their work enjoyable and tips and advice for the residents of Chapelton…

Where do you source all the furniture to transform and what piece of furniture is your favourite to upholster?

“We believe in using what people already have and creating bespoke pieces they will admire and love in their homes for years to come. We pick up pieces from charity shops or online but often rescue things that would otherwise end up in the tip. It’s a great feeling to be able to do this.

“We are always inspired when we truly transform a piece. When customers are brave enough to trust our judgement and go with something maybe a bit unusual or unique. There are so many amazing fabrics to work with. Some examples of our favourites are Timorous Beasties, Bute and Emma Shipley.”

What do you think has led to the success of business to date?

“We try our best to go over and above to create our pieces. We work closely with our clients, listen to what they want and offer advice where we can. We feel people trust in our style and brand. And attention to detail is extremely important to us.

“We both laugh at each other because every time we paint a piece we still comment on what a difference the paint makes! But it really does. It’s always a pleasure to see the transformation of something broken into beautiful.”

Do you have set costs or does it depend on the piece of furniture?

“Sometimes it’s challenging to explain the cost of work and reupholstering quite honestly might not always be the cheapest option.

“However you’ll get a bespoke and tailored design, and hopefully rescue your grannies chair from the loft in the process. We both love mid-century design. The likes of G plan and Ercol have got such well-made structure and style. We also like all things feather, hence the name Flock.HOME.

“Also we have managed to secure a second studio space which gives us a lot more storage. The future dream is to have a working studio or shop – watch this space!”

What is the highlight of Flock.HOME for you both?

“Our pop up shops are always a highlight for us. We are lucky enough to work with our lovely clients for commissions and also really enjoy the opportunity to create our own collections of furniture and wares for the home at the pop ups.”

How do you think Flock.HOME could benefit from the Chapelton community or are there any tips you would give to budding upholsters?

“Chapelton is a great new town and I think the combination of new and old would certainly suit Flocks ethos. And some lovely houses to rehome preloved furniture. We’re both from Aberdeenshire and both enjoying the rise in artistic design/culture in this area just now.

“Get in touch with us for all your furniture and upholstery needs but if you’ve got the time and space yourself give it a go! Our advice would be to spend time on prep… sand, sand and then sand again! It makes a huge difference to the finished product and quality paint. We use fusion mineral paint.”

Find Flock.HOME on Facebook and Instagram or get in touch with Ali or Amy by emailing info@flockhome.co.uk.

Chapelton Scarecrow Festival 2022: Where good meets evil

The summer holidays are coming to a close, but there is still plenty of time to get outside and explore Chapelton’s annual Scarecrow Festival. Throughout the month of August, Chapelton becomes quite the community with local residents and business owners competing to see who can create the best scarecrow.

However, these are not your average scarecrows as this year, the town has been taken over by a range of heroes and villains. From the infamous Superman to Cruella De Vil, you are likely to spot all your favourite fictional characters dotted across the town.

Now in it’s 4th year, the festival is organised by the Cairnhill Allotments Committee in Chapelton. It helps to raise money for future community projects and events in Chapelton as well as the Cairnhill Allotments.

We recommend that you begin your journey at Hume Square. Here, you will find a map of the town to guide you through the streets where you’ll be able to spot your favourite heroes and villains.

Cast your votes

Once you have had a wander around, it’s now time to vote for your favourite scarecrow – make sure to keep a note of the numbers noted on the scarecrows as these will be required when voting.

This year, you can cast multiple votes; a favourite individual entry and favourite group entry. These can be identified by the numbers attached to the scarecrow, the white numbers are for individual entries and the orange are for group entries. You will also have the option to pick the hero and villain that stood out to you the most.

All voting can be done online or via paper votes at Fits the Scoop at The Boxes at Chapelton or at the newly opened Brae Cafe located in Hume Square.

After hearing about Chapelton in the press, The Joss family made their move from their previous converted steading near St. Cyrus to Chapelton in 2016. Similarly, having got married at Elsick House in 2019, little did Kelsey and Iain know that months later Chapelton would end up becoming their new place to call home.

We caught up with both residents to find out how they are settling into life in Chapelton, their favourite features of their home and what they love most about Chapelton and its close proximity to Stonehaven and surrounding towns…

Why did you choose to live in Chapelton? What stood out to you most about the location?

“We moved to Chapelton in November 2016 and first found out about it through the press. This led us to taking multiple visits to Anitas, which was a local coffee shop at the time and was located in the first cabin as you entered Chapelton.

“As we drove into Chapelton I was immediately drawn to how beautiful the homes were, with their gorgeous frontages and the well-presented streets. The town has such a lovely traditional feel to it and I just loved how different it looked in comparison to other places I had visited.

“We ultimately chose Chapelton because we fell in love with the town. The beautiful vibe you are presented with as you drive in is so welcoming and we just knew it felt like home.”

What is it like living in Chapelton? What do you love most?

“I enjoy having all the amenities that Chapelton has to offer such as the coffee shops, the boxes, the various walks, the trail and the fact it is within close proximity to surrounding areas including Aberdeen.”

“My business partner and I own a homeware and gift store in Chapelton called ‘The Omnia’ and we have been open for several of the very popular farmers’ markets that have taken place in Chapelton over the last year. We love being able to showcase our products to the local community!

“We love staying in Chapelton and can’t see ourselves moving from here anytime soon – unless I win the lottery!”

What are your favourite features of your home?

“Before we bought the house, I had a vision of what I wanted in a new home in terms of the layout, how I wanted the space to feel and the functionality. When viewing houses, our current home ticked so many boxes and the entire process was very straightforward. Places for People were fantastic at accommodating us after we moved in.

“The features that attracted us most were the vaulted ceiling in our kitchen, the wood burning stove and the generously sized enclosed rear garden which gives our daughters plenty of space to explore and play. The living room is another standout feature for me and is definitely my favourite room in the house. It has big windows on two sides allowing for natural light to stream through creating an airy, tranquil and calming atmosphere.”

Why did you choose to live in Chapelton? What stood out to you most about the location?

“In all honesty, we had never really heard of Chapelton until we got married at Elsick House back in 2019. We had gone for a drive around the local area not long after and decided we could both see ourselves living in Chapelton.

“For being a new build development all the homes just oozed character – something that we really loved! The town just felt so quaint, colourful and like no other housing development we had ever seen before – it immediately stood out to us.”

What is it like living in Chapelton? What do you love most?

“We love living in Chapelton, it’s such a quiet, cheery and friendly place to live. It’s hard to pick what we love most but I think a couple of our favourite things are the community spirit and the abundance of green space around the town.

“There is also always something going on here in Chapelton, whether it’s comedy nights, Jubilee picnics, farmers markets or even local mums meeting for walks with their little ones and a coffee. We have a small 14 week old baby so having the opportunity to socialise with other parents has been fab for us. It has been one of the main reasons why we have made so many friends within the community.

“Chapelton offers us the best of both worlds; the sea and coastal town of Stonehaven are on one side of the community while there is lots of beautiful countryside on the other. If you don’t fancy walking too far, there are lots of little green spaces scattered around the town where you can sit and relax – perfect on a warm summer’s day. We often love taking a stroll to the box park to pick up a coffee, then see where we fancy toddling off to that day.”

What are your favourite features of your home?

“Our favourite feature of our Places for People home is definitely the wood burning stove in the living room. Previously when viewing houses, we were constantly pointing out where we could get a stove installed. When we walked into our house for the first time, we were blown away to see that one was already installed, as wood burning stoves are not a typical feature of a new build home. The stove alongside the high ceilings and extremely generous sized room make for a very cosy living space.”

What would you say to someone who is considering buying a home in Chapelton or near Stonehaven?

“If you’re looking to buy a new home in an area that is quiet, friendly and within reach of a range of local amenities, then you definitely wouldn’t regret moving to Chapelton. Although still growing, it really has everything you need roundabout the local area or within driving distance. There are so many new things in the pipeline for Chapelton, it makes us exciting to see what’s coming next (like a pub, woo!). “
