Chapelton continues to attract people from all walks of life, drawn by its welcoming community, traditional town design and exceptional quality of life. While many of our residents relocate from nearby towns and cities, some travel much further to find the perfect place to call home.

For Adam and his family, that journey began thousands of miles away in California. After years of living in some of the state’s busiest and most expensive cities, they made the life-changing decision to relocate to Scotland and settle in Chapelton.

We recently spoke with Adam, who shared what first drew his family to Chapelton, how life in Aberdeenshire compares to California and why moving here has given them the lifestyle they had always hoped for.

What was your first impression of Chapelton?

“The moment we arrived, I thought, ‘This is home’. There’s really no other way to describe it. I saw families out and about, children riding their bikes and I could easily envision our family making a life here.”

Was there a specific moment when you knew this was where you wanted to live?

“I had flown over from California to scout various properties and meet with a few different housebuilders, as well as look at some resale homes. I already had a really positive impression of Chapelton just by looking online, so shortly after landing I decided to drive through the community to see what it was like.

“Within seconds of driving in, I called my husband Kevin who had stayed behind with our children and told him that this was the place. The feeling was pretty instant upon arrival. I can’t describe it as anything other than a feeling that we were meant to be here.”

Can you tell us more about your home in Chapelton?

“When we first started our search, we looked at a variety of options throughout Chapelton and we were lucky to find a perfect four-bedroom, two-bathroom home, built by AJC Homes in 2015, that ticked all of the boxes. The property offered the space, layout and flexibility we were looking for.”

Have there been any memorable community events or experiences since moving here?

“We arrived in early November last year, so we were able to attend the Christmas tree light switch-on in Hume Square. Although we didn’t really know anyone yet, the sense of community was palpable. Overall, the festive season was a magical experience as it was our first Christmas in our new home – and in a new country. Our boys loved the Christmas parade and seeing Santa making his rounds.

“One thing that I also think is pretty incredible is how creative the community in Chapelton is. I’m a children’s book author, and was both surprised and delighted that there are two other local children’s authors living in Chapelton. A few months ago, I was part of a book reading organised at The Hut with Rachel Louisa May and Mark Watson – it was such a fun event with a lovely turnout.”

What local businesses or places have become family favourites?

“Naturally, I have to start with Brae. It’s addictive – and just a short walk up the street! It’s become a firm favourite and almost feels like it’s the centre of Chapelton. You can’t go in without running into someone you know. 

“The Boxes, in general, had immense appeal to us. They were part of the charm and character that initially sold our family on making an offer here. 

“I also really love visiting RedRocks – my five-year-old calls it ‘the shiny store’. Not only do they stock my children’s book, but it’s also just got great vibes.”

How has your day-to-day life changed compared with California?

“It’s dramatically different. Back in California, Kevin and I both worked full-time and were full-time dads. We lived in San Jose, one of the most expensive housing markets in the United States. Despite having good wages, we were priced out of ever owning a home there – at least one that would meet our family’s needs. It often felt like we were just working to survive.

“Life was so fast paced, and we never really felt a sense of community or connection with the people around us. I always described it as a ‘layover’ – somewhere that wasn’t for the long term, but rather a stepping stone on our path to where we were meant to be.

“Prior to that, we lived in Santa Clarita, California, just north of Los Angeles, and while it was also expensive, it felt like our forever home. Moving to Scotland (and Chapelton) was like flipping a light switch. We immediately felt a connection and found the sense of home we’d been longing for.

“We are fortunate that Kevin’s Army retirement and disability benefit can allow us to live comfortably while I study full-time towards a PhD in Film and Visual Culture at Aberdeen University. Kevin is currently a stay-at-home dad until both of our children are in primary school, after which we think he’ll enter the job market here.

“The change of pace has been incredible, allowing us to be our best selves and enjoy a quality of life that never would have been possible in California.”
