Winter Gardening Tips with Papillon Garden Design and Landscaping

Winter Gardening Tips with Papillon Garden Design and Landscaping

We’ve teamed up with Papillon Garden Design and Landscaping to bring you some tips on making the most of your garden throughout winter. So if you still want to get green fingered but you’re unsure how during the colder months, read the tips below.

As winter sets in, many gardeners feel they have to say goodbye to their flowerbeds and vegetable patches as the weather starts to cool. But it doesn’t have to be like this – you can prolong your season by growing winter vegetables.  Not only will it keep you busy during those short winter days, but it will also provide you with produce for wholesome dishes, for you to enjoy through the winter months.

There’s lots of choice with winter vegetables, but what you can grow will depend on your resources.

Growing vegetables outside in the ground

If you’re thinking of growing outside in the North-east of Scotland you will need to plant hardy winter vegetables that will withstand the cold such as:

Broad beans;
Garlic;
Onion setts;
Perpetual spinach.

Although these plants will fight the cold, frost can be damaging, so it’s important to protect against it.  Cloches act as a great defence; not only will they keep frost out, but they will let light in and protect against hail and wind too.

If you don’t have a cloche, a cover or fleece can be used overnight instead, although this is likely to lead to more work, so a cloche might be a good investment.

Window boxes
If your garden isn’t ready for growing vegetables yet, you can use window boxes to sow seeds for next season.  Consider sowing Spinach, Green Onions and Herbs.

Use the winter downtime to plan ahead

Winter is a great time to think about what you want from your garden and how you can better use your space to achieve this. Environmental factors come into play and can limit choice, especially when it comes to growing not just veg, but plants too.  Seeking professional advice on this could help save time and money in the long run.

Gardens are there to be appreciated, so make the most of yours and enjoy it!

Chapelton Resident Finds Perfect Place to Live, Work and Play

As one of the North East’s newest towns, Chapelton has quickly become a place for people to live, work and play.

For Fraser Sangster who lives in a ZeroC property within the town, Chapelton was the ideal place to call home whilst growing his career and becoming part of a community.

Fraser commented: “Working in the nursery school in Chapelton I always kept my eye on the properties available. I had browsed homes in other developments but often found that the housetypes were all the same and just didn’t appeal to me. It’s not like that in Chapelton and given I already worked in the town it was the perfect place to settle.

“Every corner of Chapelton is different and I love that. There’s a great mix of housetypes from different builders and as a first time buyer I was able to find a property that suited my lifestyle and budget.

“My ZeroC flat is perfect for me but the kitchen is definitely my favourite space. With the island in the middle it’s great for socialising whilst cooking. The fibre internet is also incredibly fast which makes a huge difference to everyday life.

“It takes me just minutes to walk to work and I always see so many friendly faces along the way. The community is great to be part of, especially when the farmers markets are on and everyone comes together. Everyone is so friendly and Chapelton is one of those unique places where you can meet likeminded people and really get to know them as neighbours.”

Chapelton Autumn Families Adventure

On Sunday, children and families flocked to Chapelton to take part in a seasonal adventure. Starting with an autumnal wild walk with Kincardine and Mearns Countryside Ranger Helen Young, the children enjoyed walking around Chapelton looking out for crunchy leaves and autumnal colours.

After enjoying the fresh air, children and families were welcomed back to The Hut for hot chocolates and an interactive autumn story with Diana Peers from the Grampian Association of Storytellers.

The sun came out just in time for the day and everyone had a fantastic time. Take a look at some of the pictures below.

Nature Trails, Teacake and the Cairnhill Community Allotments

With so many fantastic events on offer, we’ve got something for everyone throughout autumn, however if you’re looking for other things to do in the town remember there’s still plenty going on outside of our calendar of scheduled events.

There’s a range of nature trails around Chapelton that you can follow, so why not get wrapped up in your favourite cosy jumper and head out to see what wildlife you can spot? Alternatively, you can take a walk around the Cairnhill Community Allotments and enjoy looking at some of the fantastic seasonal veg growing there.

If you’re in need of a refreshment after a crisp autumn walk, head along to Teacake to enjoy a delicious selection of hot drinks, cakes and savoury treats. After all, the fun of the walk is the rewards when you’ve finished.

So, whether you decide to join us at one of our events or you simply want to take in the town’s sights in your own time, we hope you enjoy celebrating the season in Chapelton.

Young Family Find Their Perfect Home in Chapelton

Moving house can be a daunting process but having a team of experienced sales advisors on hand to guide you through every step of the way can make things a lot less intimidating. This was certainly the case for The Smith family who received a friendly and informative service when they bought their home with ZeroC in Chapelton.

Speaking on their experience moving home with ZeroC, Ian Smith said: “We first discovered Chapelton whilst living in Portlethen. When our daughter Frankie was born she didn’t sleep very well, and so we used to get in the car (many a time) and drive to get her to sleep and found ourselves in Chapelton. This got our minds racing and made us want to find out what was available in the area, as we loved it so much.

ZeroC in Chapelton is so different to other developers, you just don’t see houses like the designs in Aberdeen. The houses in this development look traditional, featuring lots of character and great qualities, compared to other new build properties. The layout of the houses suited our family and our needs, and we especially love the wood burning stoves within them.

Our experience with ZeroC was really easy and we were kept in the loop throughout the whole process by Sally and Graeme. Sally, the Sales Advisor was so friendly and the customer service we received was great, from start to finish.

We were in our home on time and ZeroC was kind enough to accommodate us in a rental apartment across from our new home, until it was ready to move in. It was good to also be able to see the amazing progress of the house being finished.

Our home is just perfect and our favourite aspect about it is the kitchen. We love the style and finish produced by Ashley Ann (kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms manufacture) and the great choices of customisation we were able to have. Plus, we love features such as the windows and the garden is lovely too.

We’ve also met a lot of our neighbours since living in our new home and during our stay in the rental apartment.”
