Retirement in Chapelton

The place we live effects so much of our lifestyle. After all, homes aren’t just where we sleep, they’re where we relax, where we socialise and where we create memories.

With so much to consider, making a choice about where we want to settle can be overwhelming and unfortunately, it isn’t something that gets any easier with age. So, with that in mind, we’ve pulled together some of Chapleton’s best retirement property options, whether you’re looking to downsize, for a change in space or nearby support.

What do you need?

These days there are retirement properties to suit all preferences and needs. If you don’t drive and still want to travel for leisure or to see family you might consider proximity to public transport a priority. Likewise, if you have mobility issues then perhaps a ground floor property is a must-have.

Whatever it might be it’s important to think about what things will be most important to you, both now and in the years to come.

One of the most important things to consider when choosing a retirement property is what sort of lifestyle you want to lead. If you’re someone who enjoys long walks and quiet nights in with a good book you may well fall in love with a more rural spot. Or if you love being surrounded by people, opt for somewhere with a bustling community and plenty of facilities.

How to make your home more sustainable

Over the past fortnight, we’ve been listening to world leaders, powerful entrepreneurs and citizen activists encouraging society to wake up to the impact of climate change. While it can feel like a challenge too big to undertake in daily life, there are small changes we can all make to be part of the fight against global warming.

Here, we’ve outlined some of the ways to live sustainably at home by making eco-friendly choices or swaps. Let us know if you have any tips or tricks to living a more sustainable life.

  • Save energy

The easiest and most obvious change to make is ensuring all lights and standby power items are turned off once you are finished using them. Not only will it help save you money on your electricity bills, but will also reduce the carbon emissions of your home.

Bonus points if you can adapt to using energy efficient lightbulbs, which will help reduce the number of non-renewable resources you introduce into your home. Chapelton housebuilder Places for People has a net-zero carbon strategy, which includes using new technologies such as heat storage solutions to achieve net zero carbon across their estates, as well as reducing energy.

  • Meat-free Monday

While plant-based diets aren’t new, flexitarianism is on the rise. A great way to reduce your carbon footprint is to introduce one or two meals without any meat into your diet each week. When thinking about what you’re going to eat, try to take an environmentally approach to your menu at home.

For many, this has allowed the introduction of some new favourite family meals, and for others it welcomed a healthier lifestyle. Chapelton’s community can visit local greengrocers Clementine to buy fresh local produce all week.

  • Grow your own

Since the beginning of the pandemic, many people have taken up gardening as a new hobby which is a great way to reduce carbon footprint. For some, this has included growing vegetables and herbs for their own consumption.

At Chapelton, the Cairnhill Community Allotments are available to green-fingered residents, and help the community become a more self-sufficient place. Find out how you can become part of the allotment association by visiting the website.

  • Celebrate second-hand

When we buy a new home, we love to kit out our space with the most up to date technology, furnishings, you name it! Second hand and charity shops can be great places to find interesting and unique homeware and furniture that no one else will have.

This is a great place to start if you want to live more sustainably by giving a new lease of life to products that would otherwise end up in landfill for years to come. There are a number of charity shops near Chapelton that sell all sorts of homeware items. Second-hand shopping could be the perfect fit for first time buyers, who are looking for affordable but unique items.

Read more from Chapelton residents Chris & Hannah, who upcycled some vintage items for their home to make it truly their own.

  • Switch to reusables

From Tupperware and metal straws to re-usable water bottles, there are countless ways to reduce the amount of plastic you use in your new home. The availability of multi-use and purpose items is larger than ever before, and the popularity is on the increase for good reason.

There are even some supermarkets beginning to introduce re-fill stations for items you might find in your pantry, like cereal and pasta. Taking your own Tupperware to the supermarket can really save on your overall plastic consumption and every step counts in helping you living more sustainably.

From city flat to country apartment in Chapelton: Amanda and Paul’s home

Moving from the city to the countryside can be a daunting thought for many. With plenty of facilities nearby, life in the city centre can seem effortless. However, with COVID-19 leading to many re-evaluating what they want and need from their home, prospective buyers are choosing country life now more than ever before.

Chapelton residents Amanda & Paul Dalgarno are pleased to have made the move prior to the pandemic and are now thankful for the benefits that life in the town has brought them. Switching their city flat for a countryside apartment, Amanda speaks about their new home.

Amanda-Dalgarno-Case-Study-Bespoke-Unit-1024x1024 From city flat to country apartment in Chapelton: Amanda and Paul's home

“We were living in a flat in Aberdeen but, like many, we craved more space as well as a garden and our own front door. We had looked at every new-build housebuilder in the area and then came across Chapelton while searching online.

“We took a short drive to the town and instantly fell in love with the traditional style and colours of the buildings. Every property has individual characteristics. We came to Chapelton looking for a house but when Places for People suggested that we view one of their apartments we realised it was everything we wanted in a home.

“We chose a two bedroom ‘Kilbryde’ apartment which is complete with its own front and back door, garden and great views. And with plenty of space, it doesn’t feel like a flat at all.

“The open plan kitchen and living area is much bigger than any of the other properties that we viewed and has allowed us to furnish the space with some beautiful pieces and accessories that we love. My interiors style is quite eclectic so I’ve gradually collected items with some industrial pieces as well as second hand furniture which I’ve refinished.  This works really well with the period features of the property which we were delighted we could have in a new-build. I decided to document the journey of our new home on Instagram (@the.navy.house) where I love to share posts about recent upcycle projects.

“Since moving to Chapelton I’ve also become quite passionate about gardening and spend more time outdoors than when I lived in the city. My husband and I love having green space of our own. We used cobblestones to re-create an old courtyard style garden and added plenty of greenery to soften the space. The pots and planters are great as they are low maintenance and allow us to move things around to change things up. We did all the work in the garden ourselves which makes us appreciate it even more.

We always lived in the city before moving here but we definitely see this as our forever home now and wouldn’t look back. We have made some great new friendships with our neighbours and enjoyed street barbeques and the farmers markets here. The new businesses at The Boxes at Chapelton are just around the corner too, allowing us somewhere to shop locally”.

Are you thinking about finding your forever home and moving to the countryside? Come along to our next farmers’ market to check out some of the finest produce from across the North East of Scotland. From apartments through to detached homes, there is a home to suit every need in Chapelton.

How to put your stamp on your new build home

One of the best things about becoming a home-owner is the ability to bring your own individuality and flair into your home and its decoration. Although sometimes, when you have a whole new build to get creative with, it can be hard to know where to start. We’ve pulled together the top six different ways that you can add your character to make your new build house, your home.

  • Get planning

If you’re in the market to buy a home, its likely that you will have a plan of how you would like each room to look. While this can be useful to work out in your head, it helps to get it all on paper or via an online journal.

Websites such as Pinterest are excellent tools for home renovation and allow you to create moodboards to plan rooms and decoration. We suggest creating a new moodboard per room so that you can see how each room will look and understand the flow.

  • Photo feature
  • Over recent years, we’ve seen an increase in picture walls. Whether that be your favourite snaps of your family or carefully curated pieces of art – framed prints are an excellent way to bring life and individuality into your home.

From hanging your frames straight to the wall or building some picture shelves, it’s easy to change the art on display to suit your mood or the different seasons.

    • Layer the light

New build homes are typically built with downlights – which may not be to everyone’s taste. Soften the lighting in your home by playing around with layering lighting to create more atmospheric results. Floor lamps, table lamps and even wall hanging lights can help to bring some more options into your living spaces.

    • Get “ruggy” with it

Rugs are an excellent way to provide some individuality and flair into your home. They can add a burst of colour and even soften the acoustics of your home. Better still, they are easy to remove and re-purpose if you feel you have outgrown it.

If you have an open plan home, large area rugs can really help define spaces, from your living room to your dining room. In Chapelton, many of our homes boast open plan living, so rugs may be the key to transform your living spaces.

    • Upcycle & look to the past for inspiration

Sometimes looking at vintage interiors can be an excellent way to gain inspiration for your new home. Charity shops and other second-hand sales can be an eye-opener, allowing you to bring in one of a kind treasures into your home.

Vintage interiors complement the traditional design of the properties in Chapelton, so an upcycling project can help bring some style and flare to your space. All of your visitors will be asking where you got your new piece of trendy furniture!

    • Panelling

New builds tend to have big blank walls so that you can really make your mark. One of this decade’s hottest interiors trends so far has been the introduction of panelling in living spaces. This is an excellent way to introduce new textures and colours into your wall space. There’s a lot to consider when looking at panelling for your new build – but there are thousands of videos on YouTube for beginners.

Paint it perfect – getting the right shade for your home

Are you looking to introduce some new light and life into your home? As we head into autumn, many of us are looking for inspiration to start a re-decorating project. One of the biggest hurdles is getting started in the first place with so many colours to choose from.

We’re here to give you a helping hand and have listed some of our best paint selection tips, so you can get on with the first coat!

    • Feature your favourites

Your home is a place that is unique and personal to you – it should reflect your personality and style. Whether your favourite colour is duck egg blue or a mustard yellow, there are ways to incorporate this shade into your home décor.

Have a look at paint shades closest to your favourite colour and inject some life into your living space by pairing the shade with pillows, blankets and other home accessories.

    • Match paint to your furniture

If you opt for statement pieces in your home with a pop of colour, you can use neutral shades that help the vibrant items in your house stand out.

It’s also important to consider the size of the room when looking at wall colour. Using a lighter shade in a small room can help to create a bigger space, but using a bold, dark statement wall in a large room can help tie the space together.

    • Bring the outside in

One of the biggest trends in home decoration over the past year has been bringing natural tones to our homes. Having spent so much time inside, we’ve all been looking to experiment with greens, blues and yellows to help create a more natural living space.

Plants are another excellent accessory to help create a relaxing and atmospheric room where you can take a deep breath and foot your feet up at the end of a long day.

    • Do your research

We’ve all found ourselves wandering round the aisles of DIY home stores for hours looking at paint samples and trying to visualise colours in your home. It can be overwhelming and more often than not, a waste of time.

Do your homework before you go to the shop, and have a look for paint samples, room inspiration and paint shades online. Social media sites such as Pinterest can be a lifesaver when it comes to decorating your home. Once you’ve found your perfect inspiration, save it to your phone and take it the store – you’ll be back home and painting in no time.

paint1 Paint it perfect – getting the right shade for your home
    • Sample

A key step in choosing the right colour for your home is sampling it. This simple step can often be ignored, with many of us buying pots and pots of paint in one shade, only to realise it’s not right when it gets applied it to the walls. Help reduce waste by taking a sample home to try – then you can calculate how much you need for a smooth and successful application. Some brands have adapted to using sticker samples so that you can see if you have a dream match easier than ever before. We love Lick Home’s selection of stickers, perfect for seeing how the colours look at different points throughout the home.

One of the latest businesses to be joining the retail space is The Omnia, a homeware and gift shop which will boast decorative home accessories, including beautifully scented candles and diffusers, cushions, ornaments, photo frames, greeting cards and gift wrap. Owners Fiona Joss and Karyn Werninck have both lived in Chapelton since 2016.

Fiona, a graphic designer with a lifelong passion for home interiors, tells us about opening the business: “When the opportunity of The Boxes @ Chapelton arose shortly after I graduated from the Interior Designer’s Business School I jumped at the chance. I’ve always wanted to own an interiors gift shop and to be able to work in the same town that I live in is just the dream.”

Karyn, who has a background in accounts, added: “I felt like I needed a new challenge and when Fiona was looking for a business partner to complement her design skills and creativity, it seemed like the perfect pairing.

“We’ve been neighbours and friends for a while and both of our children attended The Croft Nursery in Chapelton. With our children off to school now, it’s the ideal time to embark on a new business venture.”

Speaking of the name for the shop, Fiona said: “My husband and I were on honeymoon in Switzerland and visited a very special restaurant called ‘The Omnia’. I loved the name which means ‘prepared in all things: ready for anything’ and when Karyn and I decided to take this step together in business the name was fitting on more than one level.”

Karyn continued: “There’s been a real change in people’s shopping habits over this past year and with everyone keen to support small local businesses more than ever before, we’re sure that each unit will be hugely successful.

Fiona added: “We’re learning as we go but have the support from the developers behind Chapelton as well as the other businesses located in The Boxes @Chapelton who are opening alongside us. We’ve created a WhatsApp group which is buzzing with ideas for all of our shop fronts and how we can work together to make The Boxes @ Chapelton truly thrive. It already feels like a community within a community.”

We can’t wait to visit The Omina!

Virtual Relay Race Raises Thousands for Local Charities

The latest sporting event at Chapelton, a virtual baton passing relay, has been a huge success, raising over £3K for local charities and groups that usually benefit from the town’s ‘Chapelton of Elsick 10k’ run.

A group of 39 runners covered almost 540km (334 miles) over 48 hours between them, with each running for either one or two hour slots before passing the virtual Chapelton baton. The run took place from 6pm on Friday 9 July to 6pm on Sunday 11 July, meaning that a number of runners had to pace themselves during the night.

Charity-Run_23-1024x683 Virtual Relay Race Raises Thousands for Local Charities

The 1st and 39th runners finished at The Hut in Chapelton which would have been the start and finish of the annual Chapelton of Elsick 10k event. Unfortunately, the event was cancelled this year and last due to COVID-19 restrictions however we hope that the 2022 installment can go ahead.

Rachel Rollo, who is leading the build of Chapelton was one of the 39 runners. She said:

“This is the second year that we’ve turned the event into a hugely successful virtual baton passing relay and we’re so glad to have raised much needed funds once again for Pillar Kincardine and Portlethen Community Ambulance. We even had one runner who, due to the need to self-isolate, completed multiple laps of her driveway, adding almost 9km to the total distance covered.

“We’re extremely grateful to everyone who took part in the event, the spectators who cheered us on and of course those who donated.”

The relay race and Chapelton of Elsick 10km are part of a calendar of events that take place throughout the year here.
