Residents bring vision of ‘live, work and play’ to life with business opening

Our vision to make Chapelton a place to live, work and play is becoming a reality.

We are continuing to add businesses to The Boxes @ Chapelton, our new retail initiative which offers small businesses an affordable place to grow and the community a place to shop locally.

One of the latest businesses to be joining the retail space is The Omnia, a homeware and gift shop which will boast decorative home accessories, including beautifully scented candles and diffusers, cushions, ornaments, photo frames, greeting cards and gift wrap. Owners Fiona Joss and Karyn Werninck have both lived in Chapelton since 2016.

Fiona, a graphic designer with a lifelong passion for home interiors, tells us about opening the business: “When the opportunity of The Boxes @ Chapelton arose shortly after I graduated from the Interior Designer’s Business School I jumped at the chance. I’ve always wanted to own an interiors gift shop and to be able to work in the same town that I live in is just the dream.”

Karyn, who has a background in accounts, added: “I felt like I needed a new challenge and when Fiona was looking for a business partner to complement her design skills and creativity, it seemed like the perfect pairing.

“We’ve been neighbours and friends for a while and both of our children attended The Croft Nursery in Chapelton. With our children off to school now, it’s the ideal time to embark on a new business venture.”

Speaking of the name for the shop, Fiona said: “My husband and I were on honeymoon in Switzerland and visited a very special restaurant called ‘The Omnia’. I loved the name which means ‘prepared in all things: ready for anything’ and when Karyn and I decided to take this step together in business the name was fitting on more than one level.”

Karyn continued: “There’s been a real change in people’s shopping habits over this past year and with everyone keen to support small local businesses more than ever before, we’re sure that each unit will be hugely successful.

Fiona added: “We’re learning as we go but have the support from the developers behind Chapelton as well as the other businesses located in The Boxes @Chapelton who are opening alongside us. We’ve created a WhatsApp group which is buzzing with ideas for all of our shop fronts and how we can work together to make The Boxes @ Chapelton truly thrive. It already feels like a community within a community.”

We can’t wait to visit The Omina!

Start Up Businesses to Open Retail Space in Chapelton

We are excited to reveal an innovative new retail initiative in Chapelton that will offer small businesses a place to grow and communities a place to shop locally.

The Boxes at Chapelton initiative will see a series of outlets open from this summer in Burgess Park, including a barber, delicatessen and green grocer.

Wander & Graze

Three units have already been snapped up by local businesses keen to make the most of the opportunity. Delicatessen Wander & Graze, which offers bespoke grazing platters, was one of the first to register interest, followed by Mr Dun, a barbers which forms part of the successful James Dun’s House salon & spa. Green grocer ‘Clementine’, which first opened in Broughty Ferry in 2010, will also be joining the scheme. Keep your eyes on this space as we announce more businesses in the coming weeks.

The Boxes at Chapelton is a low cost means for small businesses to sell their products and services, and also forms part of Chapelton’s commitment to creating a supportive and self-sufficient environment where residents can live, work and play. Already home to the five-star Croft Nursery School, The Lounge beauty and hair salon, and Teacake, a popular coffee shop and bistro, the town is blossoming into a thriving community.

The Boxes at Chapelton follows our long-standing farmers’ market – an event that takes place four times a year and sees over 25 stallholders showcase some of the very best produce and products from across the North East.

Don’t miss out – make sure you keep up to dates with all the latest developments on Chapelton’s social channels.

How to Support Local Businesses

Now more than ever local businesses need support. But with many small companies currently closed due to COVID-19 and others offering a limited service, it can be hard to know what to do that will really help.

The Chapelton community has always been passionate about buying and celebrating local entrepreneurs, from the farmers market to the town’s own Teacake, and nothing is standing in the way of that. Here, we provide some helpful tips on how to continue to help your favourite small businesses.

Continue to purchase

Restaurants, cafes and shops may not be open to walk-in visitors but many are still offering sales. Companies like Bannerman Butcher are delivering meat and pies straight to doorsteps and with orders paid via card online no contact is required.

Likewise, Chapelton favourite Cove Honey Bees is also offering a no contact delivery service, with fresh bread, eggs, potatoes and of course honey available.

Show support online

If there’s a local company that you love then tell your friends about them. Showing support on social media channels such as Facebook and Instagram can work wonders for a small business. Tag friends in posts or share posts on your own channels to encourage others to consider buy from local stores.

Buy gift cards

Many restaurants, bars and hotels aren’t open at the moment but we look forward to when they are again in the future. Purchase a voucher online as a gift for someone’s birthday and you can both celebrate together when possible, or purchase for yourself as a treat. This will give you something to look forward to whilst continuing to provide revenue for closed stores and venues.

Enjoy a night in

Weekend take outs haven’t stopped and they’re a great way of celebrating a Friday or Saturday without having to step outside. Take a look online to see which local restaurants are open and available to deliver. Why not encourage your friends to do the same – you can get together virtually on a mobile app and catch up over dinner.

Don’t forget about non-food businesses

When thinking about local businesses food and drink outlets usually come to mind, but there are many others that also need our support. Hairdressers, beauty salons and fitness instructors, to name but a few, are closed for businesses at the moment but often remain active online. You’ll be amazed at who is providing virtual exercise classes that you can join from your home as well as tips on how to look after your skin, hair and wellbeing when day-to-day normality isn’t available.

Inspiring Space Available in Chapelton

Chapelton has always been a great place to make a home for yourself and your family, but now it also offers the perfect home for your business.

‘The Cabin’ is in the heart of the community and overlooks some of the town’s green space, making it ideal for creative thinkers. The Cabin offers a great opportunity for everyone from writers and painters seeking inspirational office space to wellness gurus looking for a new venue to practice yoga or mindfulness.

It isn’t just the location that makes it an ideal spot, it also benefits from the town’s wider community facilities, fast internet speeds and ample parking.

Speaking about the space, The Duchess of Fife, Director of Elsick Development Company which is leading the build of Chapelton, commented: “The Cabin was previously the town’s community centre but with new and larger premises now available we’ve relocated this space and given it a fresh lease of life.

“Overlooking plenty of greenery, including the community’s allotments, this is an ideal area for a startup business or freelancer to transform into their own working environment, or give someone who leads community groups a venue to host activities.”

The Cabin isn’t the only community facility in Chapelton, the town is also home to an array of others, including a nursery school, tearoom and bistro and hair and beauty salon. To find out more about Chapelton and its community facilities, click here.

Guide to Relaxation

There’s nothing more important than treating yourself to some ‘me time’ every now and again. Whether you’ve had a hectic week at work, your social life is pulling you in all directions or you’ve been looking after the kids and are in need of some quiet time, it’s essential that you find a few moments to relax and unwind.

We have teamed up with Kelly Daun at popular Chapelton beauty salon The Lounge, to bring you a guide to relaxation at home.

So, next time you feel the daily grind getting to you, put this simple relaxation guide to use and spend some well-deserved time pampering yourself.

Create a Calm Environment

The first step in having the perfect pamper night is to create a relaxing environment that can be your own private little sanctuary while you unwind.

Start by adjusting the lighting. Draw the blinds and turn off any strong artificial lights, opting for soft lamps or fairy lights instead. Candles are a great way to light a room and if you choose a relaxing scent like the ELEMIS Life ELIXIRS sleep scented candle, you will be ready to drift off.

Treat Yourself

The point of a pamper evening is to go out of your way to do something extra for yourself.

That could be soaking in a bath while reading your favourite book or giving yourself a manicure or pedicure.

Spending some extra time giving yourself a facial is a great way to have you feeling and looking fantastic. The Lounge have a range of luxury ELEMIS skincare products available to buy that can be used at home to give yourself a full relaxing facial.

Alternatively, whip up a home facemask using a quarter of an avocado, a tablespoon of cocoa powder and a tablespoon of honey. Mix all of the ingredients in a bowl, apply to clean, dry skin and leave on for ten minutes before washing off with warm water and then moisturising as per usual.

Whatever it is that will make you feel your best, do something extra special to treat yourself.

Get Cosy

Get into something comfy like your favourite pyjamas or loungewear and wrap up in your dressing gown.

Once you’re dressed for the occasion, settle down in a cosy corner that has plenty of comfy cushions and soft blankets that you can nestle in while you watch a light-hearted film or programme.

Make a Pot of Tea

It’s true that there’s very little a cup of tea can’t fix so pop the kettle on and make a pot of warm tea to enjoy.

Choosing a calming tea like camomile or peppermint is a great way to relax your body and mind so you can relax for the evening and enjoy a good night’s sleep when it comes.

Put Down Your Phone

This one can be tricky for some but putting your phone away is a great way to help you feel less stressed.

We can all find ourselves going down a social media rabbit hole, scrolling mindlessly for hours and feeling quite negative after looking at so many other perfectly curated lives on Instagram or Facebook.

Ignoring social media, noisy group chats or work emails will allow you to concentrate all your energy into giving yourself some self-love.
