Life in Chapelton through the eyes of a retiree

Chapelton is home to people of all ages, from newborn babies to the elderly. Our vibrant community welcomes people from all walks of life. With this in mind, we wanted to find out what life in Chapelton is like for an older resident.

So, we’re excited to introduce Frances – a colourful and much-loved member of our Chapelton community, who lives at Brio Landale Court. You may or may not know Frances, but here she shares more about her life, what brought her to Chapelton, and why she loves to call it home.

unnamed-6-768x1024 Life in Chapelton through the eyes of a retiree

Born in Leeds in 1942, Frances moved to Edinburgh in early adulthood, where she married her first husband and had her two daughters. She began working as a librarian and pursued a wide range of hobbies, always maintaining a strong interest in art. It was this passion that led her husband, a geologist, to put her forward for a role as a cartographic draughtsman – a professional map maker – with the British Geological Survey.

“I was so excited when I got the job,” she explains. “In those days, nothing was done on computers – everything was done by hand.” She was given detailed information from geologists and tasked with bringing it all together on meticulously layered maps. “It was incredible. I loved it. It was all about attention to detail – taking the information you’ve been given and making sense of it.” Through this work, Frances discovered that her artistic ability and precision were perfectly suited to the role.

unnamed-7-768x1024 Life in Chapelton through the eyes of a retiree
The first 1:50,00 solid Geology map of Arran.

Alongside her professional life, music played a hugely important role for Frances. While living in Edinburgh, she sang with the Edinburgh Grand Opera Group, an amateur company, for nine years. Singing became a lifelong passion and a defining part of her identity.

During the 1970s, she went on to create seabed maps for the rapidly expanding North Sea oil industry, compiling geological data gathered by offshore drilling teams.

“After a while, we moved to Aberdeenshire,” she recalls. Frances worked briefly in planning before joining Offshore Design Limited in Aberdeen, where she managed and organised a series of technical manuals for the Magnus oil platform.

During this time, she was offered the opportunity to go offshore, but first had to complete helicopter safety training. “I was the only woman, and I was in my fifties,” she says. “At the time, I thought, well, that’s something to tell my grandchildren. I was quite proud of that.” Despite being well outside her comfort zone, Frances completed her training and spent several days offshore – an experience she still looks back on with pride.

It was also around this time that she met her second husband. And after more than 30 years living together in Catterline, Frances and her husband began to think about the future. With a large garden becoming harder to manage and daughters living further afield – one in Switzerland and the other in St Albans – they wanted somewhere that offered security, independence and community.

By chance, they discovered Brio Landale Court during an open day. “We came along to have a look, and it was just perfect for us – and we still love it. It’s an amazing place,” Frances says. Although they wanted to downsize, they didn’t feel suited to apartment living, so when they set eyes on their cottage, they immediately knew it was the right fit.

After two years in Chapelton, Frances describes the community as “like one big family”. She particularly enjoys the layout and design of the town, especially how easy it is to walk everywhere – one of her favourite aspects of daily life.

unnamed-8-1024x683 Life in Chapelton through the eyes of a retiree

“It’s perfect for going out for walks, the way it’s been designed. I’m so proud of what the Duke and Duchess have done with Chapelton. It’s a wonderful town for any age, and I would recommend it to anybody.”

There is always something going on, from coffee mornings and craft sessions to music and organised trips. The gym has become a surprising favourite. “I’m not a gym person,” Frances says, “but I’ll go three times a week.” She especially enjoys the gentle movement and Tai Chi-style classes. “It’s use it or lose it,” she laughs.

What makes it work, she believes, is accessibility. “If it’s accessible, you’ll use it. I don’t have to get in a car and go miles – it’s just down below. Two minutes, and I’m there. I really feel very lucky!”

If she’s ever in need of a blether, Frances knows exactly where to go. “You just come into Slate and Grain for a coffee,” she says. “There’ll always be somebody there, or a member of staff who’ll stop for a chat. You’re never lonely here.”

unnamed-9-1024x743 Life in Chapelton through the eyes of a retiree

“My favourite thing about Chapelton is the people – they’re lovely,” Frances adds. She explains that there’s also a coffee morning every Tuesday, which is a great chance to catch up. Not everyone comes every week – you come when you can – but if someone isn’t there, you notice. “You wonder where they are and you look out for them.”

With a lifelong passion for art – including having her own garden studio and taking part in North East Open Studios – creativity remains an important part of who Frances is. She now enjoys the community craft classes available at Brio Landale Court. “There’s a craft class where we make all sorts of things,” she says. “There’s something almost every day if you want to do it.”

Music continues to be just as central. After moving to the Stonehaven area, Frances joined the Stonehaven Chorus, where she sang for 37 years. During that time, she took part in many singing tours across the UK and Europe, performing in numerous cathedrals – experiences she looks back on with great pride.

For Frances, Chapelton isn’t just a place to live – it’s a place where she feels connected, supported and at home. “I feel really lucky,” she says. “I’m just so happy here.”

Make a Places for People home your own with the shared equity scheme

Dreaming of owning your own home in Chapelton? Good news – it could now be even easier!

One of our trusted home builders, Places for People, is working with the Scottish Government to help make home ownership more achievable through the New Supply Shared Equity (NSSE) scheme.

And to help you find out how it all works, Places for People is hosting a special shared equity event on Saturday 29th November, where you can discover how this scheme could help you move into your dream home right here in Chapelton.

When: Saturday 29th November, 12:00 – 16:00

Where: 149 Greenlaw Road, Chapelton, AB39 8AB

Why attend: Meet the friendly team, ask questions and find out if shared equity could be the key to your brand new home!

Screenshot-2025-11-19-at-10.32.13-1024x850 Make a Places for People home your own with the shared equity scheme

What is shared equity?

If you’ve ever felt like owning a home is just out of reach, shared equity could be the helping hand you’ve been waiting for.

The New Supply Shared Equity (NSSE) scheme is designed to make buying a home more affordable, especially for first-time buyers and those who may find it tricky to take that first step onto the property ladder.

With NSSE, you can own 100% of your home while paying 60-80% of the property’s value. The remaining balance is funded by Places for People and the Scottish Government.

Instead of borrowing the full purchase price through a traditional mortgage, you take out a smaller mortgage for part of the property’s value, while the rest is covered through the scheme. And when you buy a Shared Equity home with Places for People, you could move in from as little as £129 a week!*

Unlike with other schemes, with shared equity you own your home outright from day one and there’s no rent to pay on the remaining share. The third-party simply holds a stake in the property’s value, which you can buy into further down the line (known as ‘staircasing’). Alternatively, if you decide to move on, that share can simply be repaid when you sell the property.

Screenshot-2025-11-19-at-10.33.09-1024x900 Make a Places for People home your own with the shared equity scheme

Who is eligible for shared equity?

To buy a Places for People home under the shared equity scheme, you need to meet the eligibility requirements and pass affordability checks.

To qualify, you must have a household income of under £58,000 a year in Scotland and be unable to afford a suitable home with a standard deposit and mortgage.

You will also usually need to meet one of the following criteria: be a first-time buyer, be over 60 years of age, be moving out of social housing, be an ex-veteran, be not currently a homeowner, or be an existing homeowner whose property no longer meets your needs.

You’ll also need to have a deposit of at least 5% of the share you want to buy and, if you’re not a cash buyer, be able to secure a mortgage for the remainder of your share.

What shared equity homes are available in Chapelton?

Places for People currently has a range of two and three bedroom homes available in Chapelton – including The Auchleish and The Ballantyne.

These bright, modern and energy-efficient homes are perfect for first-time buyers, growing families or downsizers looking for comfort, style and a welcoming sense of community.

Don’t miss the shared equity event!

If you’re interested in putting down roots in Chapelton and taking that exciting first step onto the property ladder, this event is for you.

Come along to the shared equity event on Saturday 29th November from 12 to 4pm at 149 Greenlaw Road, Chapelton, AB39 8AB to chat to the Places for People team, explore your options and see how shared equity could make owning your dream home a reality.

*Terms and conditions

The monthly mortgage payment is based on the Shared Equity purchase price of £230,000. Shared Equity can be offered based on affordability between 60% and 80%. These are indicative costs, subject to change and subject to affordability and credit checks. These costs were last updated 6th November 2025. Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage. We recommend taking advice from your recommended broker who will find the right deal for your buying circumstances

POV of a business owner in Chapelton: The Juicing Co.

Nestled in the heart of Chapelton’s vibrant community, The Boxes offer a unique opportunity for small businesses to flourish – and The Juicing Co is living proof of that.

From busy farmers’ market weekends to juicing for celebrities and nourishing a growing wellness community – we caught up with Vanessa to hear how The Juicing Co. is getting on at its premises 18 months after receiving the keys.

What makes Chapelton feel like the right ‘home base’ for The Juicing Co?

“It’s literally a seven-minute drive from my house to my box – which is ideal. But honestly, the community here is just lovely. I love, love, love the Chapelton community – they’re so supportive. I’ve made so many lovely friends here – they really are the best.

“Plus, The Boxes are also such a unique opportunity – there isn’t anything else that offers small, sustainable spaces for growing businesses. This made that first jump so much less scary!”

What’s it like working alongside other small, local businesses at The Boxes?

“It’s lovely. Everyone is here to support each other, we’ve got each other’s back. We all help each other out. Even though we’re all well-established in our own right, we’re still young, small businesses and a lot of us work solo, so having that little network around you really helps – it makes things feel less lonely.”

IMG_8037-1-scaled-1-1024x768 POV of a business owner in Chapelton: The Juicing Co.

It’s been 18 months since you moved into The Boxes. How has your business changed since then?

“The growth has been phenomenal. Before, I was juicing from home – and I never want to do that again! I had to work on a much smaller scale, which meant I couldn’t do events or anything like that.

“Since moving into The Boxes, everything has just grown really quickly. The farmers’ markets brought a whole new level of exposure – we’ve had queues for over an hour and a half! I feel bad in one way, but it’s also amazing.

“Having a physical space has brought a whole new level of visibility. If this is what the last 18 months have brought, I’m excited to see what the next 18 look like!”

What have been your biggest learnings as a business owner – and what advice would you give to others thinking of setting up in Chapelton?

“I think the biggest thing I’ve learned is to be flexible. You have to be willing to pivot quickly and not be afraid to try new things. Some ideas work brilliantly, and others don’t – and that’s okay. That’s just part of running a small business.

“You need to let go of your ego, be okay with things not always going to plan, and just keep trying. It’s definitely a resilience thing – learning, adapting and moving forward.

“And if you’re thinking of setting up in Chapelton, my biggest advice would be: support the local community, and the community will support you. If you show up for others, they’ll rally around you too – that’s what I’ve seen time and time again here.”

What have been some of your biggest “pinch me” moments?

“I’ve had a few pretty wild moments actually! I’ve got videos of Joey Essex drinking our juices on Dancing on Ice. We’ve also supplied Ant & Dec – I grew up watching Saturday Night Takeaway, so that was surreal.

“We’ve juiced for The Voice too – to think that Will.i.am and Sir Tom Jones have had our juices is just… wild! And I’m actually juicing for them again next month. Those kinds of moments are crazy, especially when it’s people you grew up seeing on TV.”

Have you introduced any new products or services recently? What’s proving popular?

“Other than our core range of juice packages, we launched group cleanses at the end of last year – they were really popular, and I love the community aspect of them.

“Then there’s matcha lattes – probably our most popular item ever. People are obsessed! We’ve done variations like maple matcha, vanilla matcha, and I’m about to trial a delicious collagen matcha too.

“We’ve got seasonal specials – like our berry basil juice. People love it! At the farmers’ markets, we do more specials, our super popular brunch bags, as well as a few refined sugar-free treats like our millionaire cups rather than the core range, so people can come try something new.

“The idea is: being healthy doesn’t have to be boring. You can still enjoy delicious things – but without emulsifiers, additives, or junk – just whole foods.”

What are you most looking forward to in the coming months?

“We’ve just finished Offshore Europe, which was our biggest project to date – producing over 2,400 juices. To top it off, we were recognised in a Parliamentary motion, which was just lovely!

“Looking ahead, we’re juicing for The Voice again next month, which is so exciting!

“Going forward, I want to focus on bringing out more simple wellness tools – I’ve got another eBook in the works…

“I’m also looking into bringing someone on board, which could allow us to open more days, do more events, and expand on the wellness lifestyle side of the business. I want to keep creating that awareness – that The Juicing Co is about wellness, community and feeling good from the inside out.”

A look back at this year’s Scarecrow Festival!

Now that September is here and the little ones are back to school, we’re taking a moment to look back on one of this summer’s most joyful community events here at Chapelton – the 7th annual Scarecrow Festival.

Held during the month of August, the festival brought together residents and visitors alike. With almost 60 scarecrows popping up throughout the town, this year’s ‘freestyle’ theme gave participants the freedom to let their imaginations run wild – and the results did not disappoint. With everything from a Minion to Donald ‘Hay’ Trump to Paddington Bear, the creativity on display this year was fantastic

After much anticipation, and some tough-decision making, the winners were proudly announced:

1st Place: No. 49 Jet 2 Holidays had everyone booking a one-way ticket to first place!

2nd Place: No. 11 Dave the Seagull truly ruffled some feathers – in the best way!

3rd Place: No. 38 Feathers McGraw slid into third with some seriously criminal creativity!

A massive well done to everyone who took part, and heartfelt thanks to everyone who visited, voted and helped make this year’s festival such a success.

And of course, a huge congratulations to the winners! All funds raised will be donated to charities of their choice – an important reminder that while this event is all about getting creative and bringing our wonderful community together, it’s also about giving back.

The Scarecrow Festival has firmly established itself as a much-loved tradition here in Chapelton – and we’re already looking forward to next year’s event! If you’d like to see more of this year’s scarecrows, head to the Scarecrows of Chapelton Facebook page.
