10 Easy Ways to Declutter Your Home This Spring

It might be that the longer days are putting a spring in your step, maybe you’re trying to recapture that New Year’s resolution, or perhaps you’re just ready to freshen things up. Whatever the reason, spring is a great time to declutter your home.

The prospect of starting to declutter can be a little overwhelming and we often build it up to be a bigger job than it is. So, to help you get started we’ve put together a list of simple tips to keep in mind.

1) Organise First, Buy Second

It can be tempting to start your decluttering by buying lots of boxes, folders and everything else. Beware though, if you start buying before you’ve done some organising you could end up adding clutter not reducing it.

2) Sort As You Go

Each day when you’re getting ready for work and deciding what to wear, take a couple of minutes to pull out clothes you haven’t worn in a few months. For things like winter jackets, put them in a box until you’ll need them again. For everything else, sell or donate.

3) The Maybe Box

Sometimes it is obvious what you want to get rid of and what you want to keep. But then there are the things you think you might need or you’re reluctant to get rid of. The answer is a “maybe” box. Put your maybes in the box and store it somewhere out of the way. Put a note on your calendar for a few months down the line and when the time comes around you can pull it out and see if it’s anything you really needed. Chances are if you didn’t miss it then it’s time to get rid of it.

4) Don’t Drown In Paper

Letters, forms and general paperwork has a nasty habit of spreading across your tables, drawers and surfaces. The solution is to stop it at the door. With a folder and a paper basket near the door, you can file what needs kept and recycle what doesn’t before it takes over your house.

5) The Donation Box

We’ve all sorted through things and made a mental note that something isn’t needed and should go to a charity shop, then never got around to doing it. By having a donation box in your house it is easy to pop your unwanted items in there and give them away when the box gets full.

6) Duplicate Kitchen Clutter

Do you really need all those spatulas, spoons and colanders? To quickly declutter your kitchen select just your favourites of each item and the ones you always go to use when you’re cooking. The rest can go.

7) The ‘What If?’ Hardware

That extra screw from the sofa you built when you moved in? That can probably go. The instruction manual from the kettle you bought two years ago? That can go too. In the rare situation that you need something like that they’re easy to find and often available at the click of a button.

8) Use Hidden Space

From seasonal clothes to spare linen the space under your bed is a great place to store things you don’t need every day. We often don’t use the floor space under the bed but a few labelled boxes go a long way and keep your room looking nice and tidy.

9) The 30 Day Rule

Not sure whether to keep something? The 30 day rule is often the answer. If you haven’t used something, or even thought about it, in the last 30 days then it is time to get rid of it. Although it is definitely okay to make exceptions for seasonal items like swimwear and Christmas decorations.

10) Rome Wasn’t Built In A Day

The last thing to keep in mind is that you don’t have to do everything at once. Decluttering doesn’t have to be one massive ordeal, even just a few minutes every day will go a lot further than you think.

The Perks of Having a Four-Legged Friend

Whether to get a pet or not is a discussion that most families know well. But, did you know that from young children to retirees, and everyone in between, there can be huge benefits to sharing your home with a furry friend?

Part of the family

For families with young children, a pet can help kids in a number of ways.  Developing positive relationships with pets can help a child’s self-esteem and development of trusting relationships with others.

A good relationship with a pet can also help develop non-verbal communication, compassion and empathy as well as nurturing a sense of care and responsibility.

Wellness and companionship

It isn’t just children who can benefit from bringing a pet into the family. No matter how bad your day might have been, getting home to a friendly welcome from your pet is sure to raise a smile.

Studies have shown that the bond between people and their pets can lower stress and bring happiness to their owners.

Pets can also reduce loneliness by providing companionship and increasing opportunities for social interaction.

Make the most of Chapelton with a four-legged friend

Pets can also be a great stimulus to get outside and one of the many benefits of living in Chapelton is being able to enjoy the green space on your doorstep with your furry friend.

The town boasts plenty of open space and a host of homes with gardens just waiting to be explored. And, despite being just a 20 minute drive from the centre of Aberdeen, there are lots of great spots to explore with the company of a pet.

Take a walk through the town before sitting outside Teacake where treats are always on offer, or wander along the Chapelton trail which throughout spring boasts plenty of fresh blooms and new smells for dogs to discover.

Couple Find First Home Together in Chapelton

Susan Matson had long been interested in purchasing a home in Chapelton but was holding out for the perfect property. Both Susan and her partner, Jim, loved the look and feel of the town and its community, so when the right property became available they jumped at the chance to call Chapelton ‘home’.

Susan and Jim are now the proud owners of a three-bedroom ZeroC property. Speaking of their experience, Susan said: “We started looking at properties in Chapelton quite some time ago when the town was first under development. We instantly loved the design of the houses, the landscape and the community atmosphere but unfortunately, we didn’t find a home perfect for us.

“Both Jim and I had sold our own properties and a few years later, whilst visiting Newtonhill, we decided to nip to Chapelton to see how the town was looking. We had always had a three-bedroom home in mind and when sales adviser Sally from ZeroC showed us a couple of properties, including the Ardler and the Fiddes, we were surprised to find that we may have come across our dream home.

“The Fiddes has a little extra living space and ended up being the first home we purchased together.  We love the open plan kitchen, dining and living room at the rear of the house with the wood-burning stove being a particular favourite of mine. The large windows and high ceilings throughout the property allow for plenty of light to flow through – the sun tunnels are a unique feature which instantly grabbed our attention.

“Since moving in last summer we’ve met most of our neighbours and quickly become part of Chapelton’s bustling and growing community. We’ve been invited to plenty of occasions and celebrations, from gin tasting and street BBQs to a Halloween party. Everyone is incredibly friendly and we both love bumping into people on our walks around the town. Whether we’re on a short stroll or nipping into the town’s café, Teacake, everyone is always very welcoming.

“We really do love our new home and the life we’ve made together in Chapelton.”

Cocktails to Enjoy Right Here in Chapelton

We have worked together with our friends at Aberdeen’s Orchid to put on a fantastic cocktail event right here in Chapelton.

The fun shouldn’t stop there though, why not shake things up the next time you have friends over and show off some mixology skills of your own?

This recipe from Orchid will be sure to wow guests and make staying in that little bit more special.

Chai Highball

Ingredients:
– 40ml Glasshouse Whisky
– 15ml chai vanilla tea syrup
– Ginger Ale

Method:
First of all you’ll need to make the chai vanilla tea syrup. Boil the kettle then mix 150ml of water in a bowl with 150g of sugar and stir until the sugar is dissolved. Next, put one tea bag of chai vanilla into the sugar water and leave to brew for 10 minutes. After the tea has brewed, remove the tea bag and put the mix in the fridge to chill.

Once your syrup has chilled, take a tall glass and fill it with ice. Pour the Glasshouse Whisky and your chai vanilla tea syrup into the glass and top up with ginger ale. Give your drink a quick stir, serve and enjoy.

Meet the Woman Behind Sustainable Style in Chapelton

Following the success of our clothes swap event highlighting the environmental impact fast fashion has we sat down with the ‘new to you’ fashion guru behind it. Between a busy career in the energy industry, a growing Instagram account (@swishsb) and two toddlers at home, Amanda Fullerton has still found the time to help people fight fast fashion while looking fabulous.

We wanted to know what drives her passion for sustainable style and what advice she has for people in Chapelton and beyond.

How did you get into clothes swaps?

I had two maternity leaves pretty much back-to-back. Maternity pay meant curbing my shopping habit and l learned to ‘wear my wardrobe’.  I realised I had a LOT of clothes I had forgotten about, some of which no longer fitted as my body shape had changed post-babies.

I had heard about clothes swapping and decided to organise my own to freshen up my own wardrobe, I never dreamt people would love it as much as they do!

What is the best thing that you’ve ever found at a swap?

I am always super impressed at the amazing pieces that are brought along to each swap, but the best thing is often the stories behind the clothes, I LOVE hearing the history of a piece of clothing.

Clothes can have such important memories attached to them, be it a dress you wore to your graduation, a top you can’t wear again because that colleague you can’t abide has it too or an ‘out out’ dress that, if it could talk, you would tell it to ‘shhhhhhhhhhhhhh’

Why should someone choose a clothes swap or ‘new to you’ fashion over the high street or online retailers?

It is estimated that £30billion of unused clothing hangs in UK, which equates to an average of £447 in each of our wardrobes. Traditionally we’ve kept adding to this but unfortunately at the fast fashion end of the market clothes are often not made to last and workers’ pay and conditions leave a lot to be desired.

At my clothes swap I don’t allow any clothes from fast fashion brands so you know what you’re getting will last and only cost you the price of your ticket.  Fashion is a bigger contributor to climate change than international flights and maritime shipping combined. So swapping rather than buying new, reduces the impact on your bank balance, workers and the environment.

If you could give one piece of advice to someone looking to cut back on fast fashion what would it be?

Take some time to understand the impact fast fashion has on the environment, garment workers’ rights, and your pocket before you buy that next £3 t-shirt. Instagram has LOADS of profiles dedicated to the topic.

What would you say to someone who has never been to a clothes swap?

You DO have clothes other people would like and you WILL find something you like.  Everyone always goes home smiling with some pre-loved beauties and that feeling of doing something good.

Sustainable Living in 2020

From recycling to upcycling, interest in sustainable living has never been higher. Here in Chapelton we’re keen to play our part and judging by the huge interest in our January Cosy Clothes Swap event you are too.

Moving away from fast fashion is one way we can all maintain a sustainable lifestyle and although most of us like the idea of making our lives that bit greener, it can be hard to know where to start. Here, we’ve put together a list of five simple ways to encourage a sustainable lifestyle, and make your life more environmentally friendly.

Re-use and Recycle

Finding new ways to recycle clothing or household furniture is the first step in creating a sustainable lifestyle. From charity shops to online sellers like eBay, Gumtree and many more there are lots of ways to buy things second hand. This means less energy is used making new products and less of the plastic packaging that often goes with them.

Look to loan

Going one step further than buying used, you might not even need to buy at all. For things that you’re likely to use only a handful of times, like kitchen gadgets, tools for a spot of DIY or books, borrowing might be an option. Before buying it is worth asking friends and family if they have what you’re looking for and if they would be happy to loan it to you.

Make compost at home

Composting is a good way to make use of any food waste that is produced. It is an easy and environmentally friendly way to make use of what might otherwise end up in landfill. As well as being the best way to deal with food waste it can also help your garden flourish. Chapelton’s community of keen gardeners and allotment group are often on the lookout for fresh and nutritious compost.

Love local produce

Shopping locally is a great way to live more sustainably. Buying local products has a lower carbon footprint than those flown from all over the world and also supports local businesses. Aberdeenshire is lucky to have a wealth of fantastic food and drink producers on our doorstep. You can find a lot of these in the area’s shops and at our own farmers’ market here in Chapelton.

Stay sustainable with meal prep

There are lots of ways to make your food more sustainable in addition to buying locally. One of the easiest steps is planning meals. Planning meals for the week ahead is an effective way of reducing food waste. It not only helps the environment but also ensures that you’re not spending money on food that ends up in the bin. If you’re looking for meal prep inspiration to encourage a sustainable lifestyle, you can find some of our recipes and ideas here:

December in Chapelton

December was a busy month in Chapelton with lots of festive fun.

The switching on of the Christmas lights was great for all the family, despite the weather, and even saw a visit from Santa Claus.

Crafts were the flavour of the month with a lino printing class from Juniper Press and a wreath-making workshop hosted by This is 36 Florals both proving very popular.

New Family Find Forever Home in Chapelton

When the Spence family visited the AJC Homes showhome in Chapelton in the hopes of finding interior inspiration for their own property, they had no idea that they would fall in love with the town and find their forever home.

Originally living in Laurencekirk, Iona (aged 30) had grown up in Newtonhill and so was aware of Chapelton but had never ventured into the town. Then, one Sunday when she and her husband Jonathan (aged 30) were visiting Iona’s parents, they decided to take a trip into Chapelton to visit the showhomes for ideas on decorating their own home.

What struck the couple about Chapelton is that all of the houses look so different. They loved the unique feel and thought it looked different to other new build developments they had seen. But it was the picturesque country setting, quiet roads and wide open spaces that won them over, making them sure that they wanted to call Chapelton home.

Quickly deciding to put their Laurencekirk home on the market, the Spence’s chose an AJC Homes property in the town’s Murray Street and in January 2017 they moved in with nine-week old puppy Mac.

Iona said: “Although we weren’t looking for a new home when we came to Chapelton, Jonathan and I knew that eventually we would want to move closer to Aberdeen as we both work in the city. The location is perfect for us as it’s such a short commute into the city centre whilst still retaining its countryside charm, it feels just like a small fishing village.

We decided on the Montrose house style from AJC as we loved how spacious it felt and could see us being in this home forever. We were able to choose many different elements of the house like the kitchen, tiles, doors and door handles and it’s these little touches that have made it feel like our home. Our favourite part of the property is the kitchen which has everything we need. From our seating area to large dining room table, this is the hub of our home when we spend so much time cooking and eating together as well as relaxing and spending time with friends and family.”

Since moving to Chapelton in 2017 as a three- Iona, Jonathan and Mac the Fox Red Labrador- the Spence’s have since welcomed baby Skye to the family who is now ten months old. Having such a friendly town full of neighbours who have become friends is certainly something Iona and Jonathan value.

Iona continued: “I absolutely love the community spirit here, it means so much to have a good support network around you. Since moving in, we have gotten to know our neighbours so well and we are now very close friends who even holiday together. Being a new Mum, it can be daunting going out and about on your own but moving to Chapelton has given me the chance to meet so many other Mums.

“I am currently involved in the Chapelton toddler group where I get to meet up with like-minded mums once a week. It’s great to be part of such a supportive group and bring our children together to play and make friends while the mums have a chat.

“There’s so much to see and do in the town with frequent events, sporting activities and great local facilities like The Lounge and Teacake. We recently took part in the Scarecrow Festival where Jonathan created ‘The Man from Up’ which ended up winning! It was a great festival that brought lots of new faces to the town and it was lovely to see little ones walking past our window and coming in to the garden to get their pictures taken.

“Overall, we absolutely love Chapelton and can see ourselves here for the long run as we grow into our home. The community spirit of the town makes it the perfect place for adults and little ones alike and we can’t wait to grow our family here.”
