The faces behind Chapelton: Meet Carol

In every community, there are people working hard behind the scenes to help bring it to life – and in Chapelton, Carol is one of them. A familiar face to many residents and often the first point of contact, we’re sure you’ve either spoken to her or have seen her out and about in the community.

We recently sat down with Carol to learn more about her role, what her day-to-day looks like, and some of her favourite things about Chapelton.

Tell us a little bit about yourself….

“I’m Carol, and I work part-time as the Chapelton Community Interest Company (CCIC) Administrator. I’ve previously worked in a few different places, from a GP practice to an oil services company, but I’ve been happily settled in Chapelton for almost a decade now.

“Outside of work, I look forward to Mondays as I walk with the Stonehaven over 50’s walking group – and funnily enough, the Chapelton trail is included as one of our walks. Walking has always been a love of mine and a number of years ago, I completed the West Highland way with a friend – 94 miles of pure Scottish beauty. Would I do it again? I would certainly like to try!

“I also love yoga and spending time with family and friends – often cooking and baking up a storm for them! I also volunteer once a week at the Stonehaven Public Living Room.”

What’s your role within Chapelton Community Interest Company and what does a typical day look like?

“It’s very much a people-centred role, and every day can look different, as you can imagine – so I’m always busy! My office is centrally located within Chapelton at The Hut, so residents are always popping in to ask questions.

“I deal with day-to-day administration, banking, accounts, deliver welcome packs to new residents and deal with any changes residents wish to make to the exterior of their properties. I also assist in the handover of green spaces from the developers and liaise with housebuilder sales teams.”

What’s the most rewarding part of your job?

“I love my job – even on the more challenging days, I always try to look on the bright side. I’m also lucky to have a supportive team here that I can always turn to.

“I’m proud to say that this October will mark my 10 year anniversary at Chapelton. Having been here since the early days, I’ve seen it grow and flourish. When I started, there were only 115 homes, so the most rewarding part has been seeing what was once a small community become what it is today.”

Do you have any advice for new residents?

“Attending events and perhaps if you are interested, getting involved in community groups will help you settle in, make friends and meet your neighbours.”

What do you love most about Chapelton and what do you think makes it different?

“My favourite thing about Chapelton has always been its community spirit. That’s really what sets it apart – it’s so friendly and it’s clear that the residents genuinely want to make it a special place to live. There’s always something exciting going on, from farmers’ markets to the Scarecrow Festival and the 10K.

“Chapelton is also extremely family-friendly, with plenty of green spaces and events specifically for little ones, such as Easter celebrations, Halloween activities and the Christmas light switch-on.”

Has there been any standout moments or milestones during your time at Chapelton?

“During my first Christmas at Chapelton when there were far fewer families than there are now, we gathered for the Christmas tree switch-on at The Hut, where we were all given Christmas carol song sheets. ‘Away in a Manger’ stole the show, with the children singing out loudly as the snow began to fall. It felt so magical and  truly special which brought tears of joy to my eyes. I think that was the first time I really felt part of this fantastic community.

“I would also say the completion of The Hut was an important milestone. Not only do I personally love the space, but I also love how it’s become a real hub for the community. It acts as a focal point for both residents and visitors, and over the years it has hosted so many fantastic events, classes and activities. There have been countless happy memories made there for so many people in the community.”
