We caught up with Dom to learn more about her services, the health benefits they provide and why she loves being part of the Chapelton community…
What inspired you to open your business in Chapelton, and how has the journey been so far?
“Chapelton is a vibrant, beautiful community, home to many dogs, so I realised there was a real need for a dog groomer.
“I’ll have been working in Chapelton for two years this August, and the time has flown by! It’s been lovely to be so warmly welcomed into the community, and I truly appreciate all the support from the residents. Over the past year, I’ve seen significant growth and have noticed an increasing demand for my offerings.”
What is your favourite thing about being situated in Chapelton, and what role does the community play in your day-to-day running of Dom’s Dog Grooming?
“I love working in Chapelton. The drive into work is always a highlight, as I get to see people going about their mornings – walking their dogs, taking children to school or to the local park, and generally enjoying community life. The Chapelton community plays a huge role in my business, as many of my clients are from the local area. I think the accessibility of the boxes makes it a welcoming space for anyone in the area. I’ve loved getting to know both the people and their dogs, and I look forward to continuing to help and grow alongside the community.”
Why is it important to get your dog regularly groomed?
“Regular grooming appointments are essential for various reasons, all of which contribute to keeping your dog happy and in good health. Regular grooming helps to maintain a hydrated coat and skin, keeps brushing and combing on track to prevent matting, and involves cleaning the ears to prevent ear infections. Trimming the nails also ensures your dog stays comfortable. Some dogs regulate their temperature through their coat, so it’s important to stay on top of their grooming schedule. During the grooming session, I also carry out a general health check, allowing any new lumps or abnormalities to be spotted and noted.”
How do you cater your treatments and services for each individual dog and their specific breed?
“Different breeds have different coat types and therefore require grooming with specific tools and equipment. I stock a range of shampoos designed to suit various coat types and skin needs. For example, for dogs with sensitive skin, I use a milder, hypoallergenic shampoo. Each new dog receives a tailored grooming session, and I work closely with the owner to ensure the dog receives the best possible service for their comfort and happiness. There are also a selection of additional spa treatments available, such as mud baths to help with shedding coats, blueberry facials to help lighter breeds remove tear stains, and pawdicures to keep your pup’s paw pads soft and hydrated.”
What are the health benefits of a professional bath and blow-dry versus doing it at home?
“The equipment used in a dog grooming salon is typically of a higher quality than what is found at home or purchased from regular pet stores. For example, our hydro bathing system ensures a squeaky clean wash while also providing a soothing massage for the muscles. I’m also happy to offer advice and can recommend suitable products to support their ongoing grooming and wellbeing at home.
“As mentioned earlier, I also carry out a general health check on every dog that comes into the salon, so I will keep an eye on any changes to your dog’s health.”
How can grooming services be tailored to meet the health needs of puppies or senior dogs differently?
“All dogs need their grooming experience tailored to suit them and their individual needs – especially the young and the elderly. I offer a puppy induction package for puppies up to 9 months old, designed to gently ease the wee ones into the grooming experience.
“For our senior doggies, a little extra care is sometimes needed due to illness or disability. Grooming aids can provide support for elderly dogs, and often a longer, slower-paced appointment is required to ensure they are comfortable and well cared for throughout the process.”
How important is ear cleaning and how can I tell if my dog needs it?
“Keeping your dog’s ears clean is very important for their overall health. If a dog’s ears aren’t cleaned regularly, wax – and in some breeds, even hair – can build up, leading to infections and potentially even hearing loss, not to mention general discomfort. You can usually tell if your dog’s ears need cleaning if they are scratching or shaking their head, or if there’s a noticeable smell or brown wax visible in the ear canal.”
What can regular teeth cleaning do for my dog’s overall health?
“Regular teeth cleaning helps prevent plaque build-up on your dog’s teeth and can reduce the risk of infection and gum disease. Not to mention, it helps keep that unpleasant doggy breath at bay!”
